Enough! You can drown in this self pity. While the GOPers are shaking off their Chrystal hangover and Budweiser buzz, pour some coffee down your gullet and get your game hat back on.
Cleveland and the rest of Northern Ohio poured everything into this but came up short. I'm proud as hell of the unbelievable efforts we put forth. We still fielded a pretty good team the year after being three strikes away from a World Series win. We came back after "Red Right, 88," "The Fumble," and "The Drive." They stole our frickin team and we built a new palace and put in a new organization and life is still sweet.
We start from the top . . . Terry McAuliffe is out . . . and we work from the bottom too . . .
KOS: Count the votes! It's not over in Ohio. As this email notes: Bush is currently leading in Ohio by 136,221 If there are 250,000 provisional ballots outstanding. The highest number I've seen. And 90% of those ballots are good, as they were in 2000. That leaves 225,000 votes. If 85% of those ballots prove to be for Kerry, about the number that Gore got in 2000. That leaves us with 191,250, giving us a lead of 55,029. If there are only 200,000 provisionals, following the same calculation would leave us with a lead of 16,779. If the provisional ballots are only 175,000 that leaves us with a deficit of -2,346 that will leaves us in a position to get an automatic statewide recount. Or, to put it another way, an automatic recount is triggered by a margin of 0.25% or between 13,000 and 16,000 votes.
That is not to say that we fight a fruitless battle. Kerry conceded, that's the way it goes. But look how close we came! We fought the best machine the GOP has ever put forth, and incumbant during times of multiple crisises (which were mostly his fault, whatever) - to a statisical tie. We still have a lot of work to do to get over the hump.
One thing we're never going to do and that is convince our Southern bretheren to change their deeply held convictions, no matter how wrong-headed, about God, guns and gays. Live with it. One thing we can do is work on their shepherds who mold their minds every weekend.
Moral issues were the #1 factor for Ohio Bush voters. Do you think it's a coincidence that every state that surrounds us has gambling, but not here? The easiest way to tell if someone was a Bush supporter was to ask if they went to church regularly.
As awesome it is to see our candidate singing in a black baptist church, it doesn't impress a southern white methodist who starts calling realtors when a black family moves too close.
We need to break down the doors of southern white churches. I don't know how to do it or who can. But until we do we will be stuck in the wilderness watching our planet go straight to hell. Remember, they don't care because they've all been "saved" and await the rapture -- confidently leaving the destruction they intend to wrought for us to clean up.
