Intellectual freedom is the only guarantee of a

They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.

Rememember Usenet. I was (and still do) use the original internet backbone on my old Apple ][-GS, before there was a "web" pr browsers. (The 'GS is on the scrap heap, but usenet is still growing.) Godwin's Law was recognized early on as a truism then and now..
Basically it states: As a Usenet discussion grows longer, the probability of a comparison involving Nazis or Hitler approaches one.
The obvious conclusion is that you can tell a discussion is essentially over, and that calmer heads have already moved on to other threads, as soon as Hitler and his henchmen are mentioned. I only mention this because, as Ara points out, the Kool-aide drinking Bush apologists are still trying to rant or explain away the inexplicable rationale for images of Hitler appearing on the Bush reelection site.
I believe that this indicates a desperation, in June for Pete's sake, on the part of the entire GOP apparatus. They have everything they've wanted since Watergate, complete control over all three branches of government, plus a majority of State Legislatures and Governorships. Even though they are a minority of the populous, they are organized and actively vote in a large enough percentage to control the agenda. Jesse Jackson said: As In politics, an organized minority is a political majority.
I think the GOP is done. They got control of of the country, and broke it. The sniping will tear them apart and the discipline that Newt Gingrich and others brought to the party will be forgotten as the religious fanatics on the far right marginalize them still further.
By resorting to arguments invoking Hitler, you can tell that they're done. If Kerry can improve the situtation (nowhere to go but up from here) with a narrow democratic lead in the Senate over the next two years, I see us taking back the House in '06, and replacing Sandy Day and Renquist with rationale counterweights to Scallia and Thomas in the SCOTUS by 2010.
Then it will be our turn to bring us all peace and prosperity or break it as well.
